Project title: Creating access to social and economic opportunities among women by empowering them in various leadership and socio-economic activities in the Bono East Region of Ghana
The project creating access to social and economic opportunities among women by empowering them in various leadership and socio-economic activities in the Bono East Region of Ghana was implemented within the 4 project communities since the onset of the implementation of the Gender Transformative Programming (GTP) grant award under the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) project.
The rationale behind the implementation of the GPT project is that, majority of women in the Bono East Region are petty traders, head potters and small-scale farmers lack access to loans, farmlands, and the skills and capital to engage in economic activities. The disadvantaged status of these women and the prevalence of gender stereotypes limit their access to power, decision-making, resources and fulfilment of their human rights. Despite the affirmative actions over the years, gender inequalities still exist and efforts by CSOs and communities have not yet been sufficient to mitigate the predominant challenges rural women face year after year.
Overall, the WVL-Gh, GTP project implemented by COPIO was relevant as it addressed the gender gap and increase leadership role and employability in the Bono East Region. Alongside addressing misinformation and negative perception on Covid-19 by providing accurate information to help curb the spread and responds to the needs of the communities by providing economic empowerment to reduce poverty in the Bono East Region. The project goal, purpose, results and implemented activities present a logical flow and are aligned to the project aim and intentions.
COPIO’s Gender Equality Strategy frames aims at achieving a gender equal where gender-based violence, sex discrimination and structural inequality between women and men are a thing of the past. A country where women and men, girls and boys, in all their diversity, are equal. Where they are free to pursue their chosen path in life, where they have equal opportunities to thrive, and where they can equally participate in and lead our society.
The implementation of the project has been based on the dual approach of targeted measures to achieve gender equality, combined with strengthened gender mainstreaming. During the implementation of the first quarter activities, project sensitized women to be increasingly participate in the labor market to have a strong, positive impact on the economy, notably in the context of a shrinking workforce and skills shortages. It also empowers women to shape their own lives, play a role in public life and be economically independent. COPIO Believes that, at the end of the project, gender inequality gap will be breached.
